2nd Keynote Speaker from HarvestPlus

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Dr. Howarth Bouis is the Director of HarvestPlus Foundation. HarvestPlus’  first funding came from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and it helped launch the program to reduce hidden hunger and strive to provide micronutrients to billions of people.

HarvestPlus coined the term “biofortification” to describe the modification of foods through micronutrients. The foundation focuses on three critical micronutrients that are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as most limiting in diets: iron, zinc, and vitamin A. It is hoped that within  fifteen years, millions of people suffering from micronutrient malnutrition will be eating new biofortified crop varieties.

Major Sponsors of the HarvestPlus programs include The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and World Bank. For more information about their programs: www.harvestplus.org

Saving lives with enriched cereal crops

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The first confirmed speaker for The Farm Forum Event 2010 is Dr. Ismail Cakmak from the Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Dr. Cakmak’s research focuses on genetic and agronomic biofortification of cereal crops with zinc and iron.

It is estimated that about half of the world population is affected from micronutrient deficiencies. Dr. Camak’s research is looking at fortifying cereal crops with these nutrients to reduce human deficiencies and reduce the incidence of health problems. Early research indicates that the enrichment of certain crops may save the lives of tens of thousands of children.

For more information on Dr. Camak’s research see his university webpage.

Growing Innovation

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Hi, this is Rob Saik, founder of The Agri-Trend Group of Companies and I welcome you to The Farm Forum Event Blog.

We first began running The Farm Forum Event in 1998 as a way to introduce the Ag community in Western Canada to Agri-Trend Agrology and to inform farmers about how they could benefit from The Strategic Crop Plan Process delivered by our Agri-Coaches.

Back then we traveled across Western Canada doing 10 meetings in 10 days – starting in Winnipeg and ending in Peace River – and it nearly killed us…but the road show was fun and the farmers really responded to the event.

As The Agri-Trend Network grew the focus of The Farm Forum Event changed. We realized that we could turn The Event into a ”bridge” between our Network of Agri-Coaches and their Strategic Crop Plan customers.

We also felt strongly (and still do), that the ”industry” had a lot to teach us and farmers about their products and technologies.

So in 2005 we changed the format of The Farm Forum Event to a two day session and invited the industry to be a part of the show where they could present their ideas in some of the 63 breakout sessions offered at the event.

We The Farm Forum Event to the Saskatoon Inn in 2006 until the swelling numbers caused us to relocate The Event to TCU Place for November 2009.

All along the way we have tried to respect the choice for our farm attendees to choose which sessions they would like to attend while providing our Industry Partners with ample opportunity to network with the very high caliber farmers who attend The Farm Forum Event.

Over the years we have had great support from the industry, but I would like to single out MNP, RBC, Pattison Liquid Systems and Bayer Crop Science who have been important to making this event possible.

This year we will feature world caliber 7 keynote speakers, 63 breakout sessions featuring industry partner and Senior Agri-Trend presentors, a great tradeshow, terrific banquet AND it all kicks off with the Pattison Liquid mixer on Tuesday (November 17th) evening.

If you are a company looking to get involved as a Farm Forum Event Industry Partner please contact Chris Paterson, VP of Business Development at cpaterson@agritrend.com .

If you are a farmer, you can register at www.thefarmforumevent.com – see you in Saskatoon.
